Dan Andreae Lectureship
Dr. Andreae is a Professor at the University of Guelph and Adjunct Associate Professor at Rension University with a distinguished academic career. He has taught more than 45 different subjects at university and college during his career, although his love is psychology. Born in Canada, Dr. Andreae holds a Doctorate in Education from the University of Toronto, a Masters in Clinical Social Work from Wilfrid Laurier University, and a Bachelor’s in Psychology from York University.
Always striving to add to his extensive knowledge base he also possesses an advanced diploma in Stress Management and a Post Graduate Certificate in Neuro-psychophysiology. Dr.Andreae has a passion for education and a dedication to lifelong learning. He brings a wealth of experience to the classroom to share with students, having served as the Executive Director of a health agency that established the National Eating Disorder Center at Toronto Hospital and as the first Executive Director of the Alzheimer Society in Toronto. In addition, he has been the longest serving President of the social work profession in Ontario and board member of organizations such as the Psychology Foundation of Canada and the Weizmann Institute of Science-Canadian division It is important to address the whole individual in education and to tap as well in to students’ hopes, aspirations, and doubts and fears by creating a safe and supportive environment, thus planting the seeds for exploration, critical thinking, and growth.
In 2010, Dr. Daniel C. Andreae received the prestigious Ontario Medal of Good Citizenship for his work as a transformational leader in the social work profession. He has built province-wide coalitions, liaised with allied professionals, and worked closely with elected officials and senior civil servants to lead a 10-year campaign to establish social work as a regulated profession in Ontario. This successful campaign culminated with legislation that protects and benefits Ontarians, and led to the creation of a College of Social Work to regulate the profession. He has received many other awards and honors, including the June Callwood Award for inspirational leadership in the voluntary sector given by the Premier, the Distinguished Teaching Award at the University of Waterloo in 2005, twice selected as University of Guelph Humber’s Faculty of the Year – most recently in the Faculty of Psychology in 2011, Laurier’s Alumnus of the Year in 2001, Lyle S. Hallman Award from Laurier’s Lyle S. Hallman Faculty of Social Work in 2008, Champion of Change Award for contributions to the Alzheimer cause in 2011 presented by Princess Yasmin Khan, an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Assumption University for contributions to health care in 2007, and recognition at the national and provincial levels in social.
Dr. Andreae’s community involvement includes being the first Executive Director of the Alzheimer Society of Toronto, and Chair of the Patrons Council of the Society. Dr. Andreae’s involvement in neurodegenerative causes has made him realize that education and research around the brain is crucial, and has led to the management of conditions and enhanced quality of life. This applies to a wide range of issues from Alzheimer’s, autism, traumatic brain injuries, and Tourettes Syndrome. Dr. Daniel Andreae believes that education, especially in our fast paced and globalized age, is a necessary, life long process that must be nurtured in higher education.
Dr. Andreae believes that “education is not just an intellectual exercise, it is most effective when the head meets the heart and knowledge can be applied to enhance the quality of one’s life on all levels; emotional, physical, spiritual and social”. He says, “It is helping students view the complexities of life and issues from different perspectives and watching them connect the dots so to speak that brings great rewards to a career in education.
